Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton was hospitalized on Tuesday after police responded to his home where a man was livestreaming acts of self-harm on social media, according to the Miami-Dade, Florida, sheriff's office.
A statement posted on PerezHilton.com confirmed his care: "We can confirm that Perez is receiving medical care, and our family's focus right now is on his well-being. We kindly ask that you respect Perez's privacy, as well as the privacy of his family, during this difficult time."
Entertainment columnist Rob Shuter, who has known Mario Lavandeira, better known as Perez Hilton, for more than 25 years, noted the irony of the public response as people decide whether to show compassion to the blogger who built an empire on celebrity scandal.
