Daniil Shchepelyaev, an allergist at the Scandinavian Health Centre, has outlined the primary causes of household allergies linked to pillows and blankets.

Speaking to news outlet RT, Shchepelyaev explained that microscopic dust mites living in bedding are the primary culprit behind allergic reactions. These organisms settle in bed linens and feed on shed human skin scales. The allergic symptoms experienced by individuals are primarily triggered by the waste products and metabolic traces left behind by the mites.

In addition to microscopic mites, Shchepelyaev noted that mold fungi growing within pillow and blanket filling represent another widespread cause of allergic reactions. Mold spores can accumulate inside bedding over time, creating environmental hazards for sensitive individuals during sleep.

Synthetic bedding risks

Addressing synthetic bedding materials, Shchepelyaev pointed out that synthetic fillings such as polyester, hollofiber, and artificial swan down rarely provoke allergic reactions on their own. However, he emphasized that synthetic fibers offer no immunity against pest infestations if proper hygiene is neglected. Leaving a synthetic pillow unwashed for two years allows dust mites to colonize the material just as easily as traditional feather bedding.

House dust mites are microscopic arachnids that feed on organic debris, particularly dander and skin flakes shed by humans. Because humans lose millions of skin cells daily and shed moisture during sleep, mattresses and bedding provide an ideal habitat for dust mite colonies. The proteins present in dust mite fecal matter and decaying bodies are among the most common triggers for allergic rhinitis, asthma, and eczema worldwide.

Bedding maintenance and medical context

Synthetic materials like polyester fiberfill and hollofiber are engineered to provide lightweight warmth and springy support while resisting moisture. Hollofiber features hollow synthetic strands that trap air for thermal insulation. While these inorganic fibers do not serve as a food source for mites, organic dust, body oils, and skin cells inevitably accumulate in unwashed synthetic bedding, creating a fertile feeding ground for pests and fungal growth over time.

The Scandinavian Health Centre is a private medical network in Moscow providing specialized consultations in pulmonology, allergy care, and internal medicine. Shchepelyaev serves as an allergist-immunologist and pulmonologist at the facility. In a separate seasonal health warning, biologist Dmitry Safonov noted that wasps and hornets become significantly more aggressive in early autumn, leading to a seasonal peak in hospital visits for insect stings.
