Queen Sofía wears Cathedral-inspired brooch in Mallorca

Queen Sofía of Spain wore a symbolic gold brooch inspired by Palma Cathedral at the royal family's annual summer reception at Marivent Palace in Mallorca on Tuesday. The former queen mother completed her summer outfit with the jewel from historic Mallorcan house Isabel Guarch as the royals welcomed representatives of Balearic society. She paired the gold piece with a bohemian floral caftan by Spanish designer Alejandro de Miguel.

The evening gathering brought together King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Queen Sofía, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía for one of the primary official events of their island stay. While Queen Letizia chose metallic gold sandals over traditional espadrilles to elevate a white summer dress, Queen Sofía drew attention to her choice of accessories, which offered a direct tribute to Mallorca.

The gold brooch belongs to the Llum collection created by Isabel Guarch, one of the most established high jewelry houses in Mallorca. Its design is based on the famous rose window of the Cathedral of Mallorca, locally known as La Seo, which stands as the most iconic monument in Palma.

The collection takes inspiration from the Fiesta de la Luz, or Festival of Light, a rare natural phenomenon that occurs twice a year inside the Gothic cathedral. During the event, early morning sunlight passes directly through the massive main rose window, projecting a brilliant reflection onto the opposite wall beneath the smaller rose window to form a luminous figure eight inside the church.

That interplay of light served as the creative foundation for the jewel, designed to honor Mediterranean essence and Balearic artistic heritage. Palma Cathedral, built on the city seafront over several centuries beginning in the thirteenth century, is celebrated globally for its expansive nave and stained-glass rose window, which measures nearly twelve metres across.

A Tribute to Balearic Society

The decision by Queen Sofía to wear the gold brooch was seen as a deliberate nod to the host island during one of the most significant official gatherings of the summer. The annual Marivent reception brings together figures from Balearic politics, culture, science, sports, and civil society.

By selecting the piece, the former queen highlighted local Mallorcan craftsmanship and underscored her decades-long connection to the Balearic Islands. Observers described the accessory as a subtle yet meaningful gesture that seamlessly complemented her floor-length floral caftan by Alejandro de Miguel.

Marivent Palace, located in the Cala Major area of Palma, has served as the official summer residence for the Spanish royal family since 1973. The estate, originally designed by architect Guillem Forteza in the 1920s, provides the setting for the royal family's yearly diplomatic and civic receptions in the Mediterranean.

The Legacy of Isabel Guarch

Founded in 1957, Isabel Guarch is recognized as one of the most prestigious fine jewelry houses in Mallorca. Over nearly seven decades, the firm has built an international reputation by creating collections deeply rooted in the history, architecture, and traditions of the Balearic Islands.

The jewelry brand is a recurring staple in the Spanish royal family's collection. Over the years, both Queen Sofía and Queen Letizia have consistently chosen Isabel Guarch creations for official public appearances and formal events held in Mallorca.

The gold brooch demonstrated how thoughtful accessory choices can transform a summer ensemble into a tribute to local culture. Fashion commentators noted that the jewel effectively combined historical symbolism with traditional island craftsmanship.

Royal Summer Agenda

The Marivent Palace reception forms a centerpiece of the royal family's annual summer agenda in Palma de Mallorca. Alongside official state duties and civic receptions, members of the royal household regularly participate in regional cultural activities and sporting events, including the annual King's Cup sailing regatta in the Bay of Palma.

Following the traditional reception, the royal family will continue their stay in Mallorca before concluding their official summer engagements across the Balearic archipelago.
