Rebel Wilson put on a glamorous display at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, just days after she was caught up in airport travel chaos following a system failure at Heathrow.

The Australian actress, 46, was one of several stars and 250,000 travellers affected as hundreds of flights in and out of Britain were cancelled because of an air traffic control system failure. Rebel managed to fly out of the country in time and was all smiles as she hit the red carpet for the world premiere of her film Girl Group at Roy Thomson Hall.

The film star wowed in a plunging, off-the-shoulder black gown with a silver encrusted neckline, showcasing her slimmed-down frame in the form-fitting dress, which she teamed with a black handbag and heels. She wore her blonde hair loose for the occasion.

Rebel Wilson's Girl Group premiere

Rebel writes, directs and stars in Girl Group, in which she plays a former pop star who finds new purpose coaching a group of misfit teenage girls for a life-changing audition, hoping to get them signed by a top record label. She beamed with pride as she joined her co-stars at the screening before cosying up to her wife, Ramona Agruma.

Heathrow airport chaos

It comes after Wilson looked exhausted as she shared videos of herself walking through a terminal packed with stranded passengers, after visiting the city for work. Rather than attempting to leave the country at that point, she suggested she had abandoned her original plans, telling fans she was "escaping" the airport.

She panned her camera around the luggage collection area to show crowds of people in a similar situation, sarcastically writing "Heathrow awesomeness." The comedian did not reveal her alternative travel plans, but was among tens of thousands of people dealing with the knock-on impacts of the failure.

Wilson was not the only star caught up in the disruption. Benedict Cumberbatch, 50, was seen arriving at Heathrow pushing his luggage on a trolley as he seemingly attempted to catch a flight, while Elizabeth Hurley and her son Damian were also spotted at the airport. Olivia Attwood, 35, fresh from an appearance at the National Television Awards on Tuesday, was seen making her way into arrivals with her cases.

What caused the system failure

Some 1,750 flights to and from UK hubs were cancelled on Tuesday after a major issue at National Air Traffic Services (NATS), which provides control to 15 British airports. NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe was summoned to speak to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, facing calls from airline bosses to resign, before she addressed MPs in the House of Commons for the Civil Aviation Bill's second reading.

After some passengers slept on floors overnight, Heathrow had 246 cancellations by 6am on Wednesday, while 33 services were axed at Gatwick, according to FlightRadar24. At Heathrow's Terminal 4, passengers slept on yoga mats on the floor overnight as they waited for updates on their flights.

Passengers travelling through all UK airports were warned to check their flights before setting off, with the disruption possibly lasting until the end of the month.
