Criticism of ‘Missing’, the great presentation of Storm Reid

‘Missing’ exploits the game of possible suspects, spins on it and takes wild turns as it introduces us to the up and coming Storm Reid.

First it was ‘Deleted’. Then came ‘Searching’. And now, ‘Missing’. Movies that endorse the maxim “If you can’t beat your enemy, join him”, and where everything passes through the filter of computer screens, mobile phones and, now, even watches. Anything goes, any format is good for telling a story. Even if those are the ones who have moved the target audience of these proposals away from the theaters to individualize through networks or platforms what was previously a collective experience. And it is even more curious that they propose that we go to a cinema to see it, and not in the privacy of the home, where, unfortunately and through a pandemic, we have become used to enjoying them.

And I say enjoy them, because like its precedents, the effectiveness of ‘Missing’ is beyond any doubt. In fact, it would be a spiritual continuation of ‘Searching’ in terms of format and genre (thriller). If there was a father desperate to find his missing daughter, here is a young woman who must find her mother. Both also share the secrets that are hidden behind the digital facade, and start from a family tragedy to find an emotional connection. But it is not really necessary to have seen the previous one to enjoy (and suffer in the literal term of the verb) from and with this one. And in the formal section, both maintain the narrative and planning constants, being aware of the limit that betting on this format implies.

But here is more of everything. First, it shows us how, in the five years that separates one from the other, technology has advanced, and the new possibilities it offers to the formula. After, he exploits the game more of the possible suspects, he spins on it more, and because, as he progresses at a dizzying pace, he takes some absolutely wild and crazy twists and turns to reach his destination in the resolution. Of course, as long as we leave aside concepts such as logic and plausibility in a format that helps to cover all those holes the size of the Ngorongoro crater that cannot withstand a second viewing. Because let’s see, who leaves the computer’s camera running once they have stopped talking to the other person?

And if there are two things that remain clear after viewing it, the first is that it’s scary to see that through the Internet you can find out everything, absolutely everything, about any of us. And second, is that This entertainment is forgotten quickly, very quickly, but heck, how can you enjoy yourself in a movie theater seat?.

For addicted to filmic roller coasters in the form of addictive thrillers

The best: its continuous and crazy turns, and how it maintains the tension.

The worst: a surprising resolution, but it squeaks.
