Michael B. Jordan makes his debut as a director with ‘Creed III’, the first film in the saga without Sylvester Stallone but with the same claw in the ring.
‘Creed III’ is an important title in the franchise since it is the first one that does not have Sylvester Stallone playing Rocky and, to underline the delivery of the gloves, it has been the film with which the brilliant Michael B. Jordan has premiered at the address. But if we forget about these production details and focus on what really counts, things change.
Nothing in ‘Creed III’ seems new, which does not prevent the umpteenth story of a fighter faced with his past, forced to get into the ring after his retirement because no one in his gym, nor his champion, can face a ghost of his youth that has returned to torture him. And it’s a shame because If only Zach Baylin and Keenan Coogler’s script had been a little more gritty, or at least a little more subtle in embracing each and every platitude of socially funded redemption sports epics, Jordan’s debut , apart from an entertaining boxing movie, it would have been memorable.
His desire to stand out behind the camera has been accompanied by the technique of the one who has done his homework and the nose of the one who was born to do it. It is very easy to get caught up in the photography and the rhythm that the newcomer director imposes on the film, no matter how much his well-worn plot and thick narrative do not give up in his efforts to repeat formulas that we already know. Jonathan Majors may have already realized all of this, and thus he appears to be acting with no pretense other than to make his job acceptable. Luckily, being him, it ends up being perfect.
Can this franchise continue without Rocky? Yes, but you need a new script in which Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson can prove that they are more than worthy heirs to a saga that could offer many more hooks with the right training, as ‘Rocky IV’ (Sylvester Stallone, 1985) demonstrated. And ‘Rocky Balboa’ (Sylvester Stallone, 2006), And ‘Creed. The Legend of Rocky’ (Ryan Coogler, 2015).
For those who need another surgical precision hook
The best: the desire that Michael B. Jordan has for the cinema.
The worst: the absolute lack of subtlety makes it artificial. And about the cage…
