François Ozon directs ‘My Crime’, a title full of nods to the screwball comedies of golden Hollywood that, however, feels rabidly current.
For his 17th feature in the last 20 years, something that accounts for his feverish pace of work, François Ozon sets his sights on a play signed by Georges Berr and Louis Verneuil in 1934, which proves its heterogeneity and breadth of vision and styles, as well as its versatility when it comes to jumping from one genre to another. The director of ‘En la casa’ (2012) returns to comedy with a story that, despite taking place in the 1930s and being loaded with nods to screwball comedies of golden Hollywood (vivid dialogues, the fondness for narrative artifice so typical of Sturges or Lubitsch, the quote from Billy Wilder and ‘Dangerous Curves’, his only French film), feels furiously current: the fake newsthe culture of fame or the fight against patriarchy are the central themes of the film.
Weighty theses that contrast with the great asset of the proposal, in addition to the excellent work of Tereszkiewicz and Marder or the battalion of French cinema veterans who accompany them: his determined commitment to not take anything seriously. The key to enter this fun that brings us back to the most casual Ozon.
