Remake of the Norwegian thriller ‘One after another’, ‘Revenge below zero’ offers psychological drama, suspense, action and black comedy from Liam Neeson.
You may think that this is just another of the entertaining but unoriginal films in the Revenge saga, to the greater glory of Liam Neeson. If so, they’re wrong… But they won’t regret it. ‘Revenge below zero’, a faithful and intelligent remake of the Norwegian thriller ‘One after another’ (2014), offers a little bit of everything for everyone: a touch of psychological drama, suspense, action, violence and, above all and above all, humor.
A black and cold humor, ingenious, astute and well dosed, in the Nordic vein of Kaurismäki, but without exaggerating the note, and picking up the baton from the accomplice, sharp and sometimes even cruel neonoir of the best era of Tarantino, the Coens, Guy Ritchie and his self-ironic and referential gangster cinema, only with greater freshness and on the verge of galloping magical surrealism, inevitably sympathetic. Of course, much of the success corresponds to the fact that it is exactly the same director of the original, the always successful Hans Petter Moland, the one in charge of copying himself a bit in Hollywood, but without losing his personality or style, thanks also to the script by Frank Baldwin . In short: one of the most refreshing and enjoyable movies –and one of the chases– of the year.
For neo-noir tasters with a black comedy tone and ingenuity in abundance.
The best: perfectly preserve the Nordic and surreal humor of the original.
The worst: if you saw ‘One after another’ you already know how it ends (but it doesn’t matter).
