Review of ‘Le Mans ’66’

Matt Damon and Christian Bale team up in ‘Ford v. Ferrari’ to overthrow Ferrari’s dominance of the 1966 Le Mans World Championship.

This movie is as if in a game of your favorite basketball team, in addition to scoring, the players sang like the Jackson Five. Or as if in a beach conversation between Chris and Liam Hemsworth, wet torsos in the sun, both suddenly marveled at his sharpness and wit. Indeed, one does not go to see a feature film whose original title is ‘Ford v Ferrari’ because of the ‘talking’ scenes, but I assure you that after viewing it, what your memories will retain will not only be the (impressive, of course) choreography behind the wheel, but also the many high-level moments of writing, acting and staging.

Although… hadn’t some work by James Mangold, that dependable all-rounder, so far shown a solid-as-steel finish? Buddy movie with more emotional chitchat than meets the eye and some (insightful) commentary on corporate culture on both sides of the ocean, ‘Le Mans ’66’ wins as a feverish show and convinces as a character drama. Muscular in form and fine in its dramatic intentions, it is more than a racing film, while also constituting the best compilation of racing scenes imaginable.

For those nostalgic for the great reconstructions of true stories.

The best: its overwhelming technical invoice.

The worst: that Enzo Ferrari plays the role of villain of the show.
