Nicolas Cage plays an exaggerated version of himself (sort of) in an action comedy where he shines alongside a dedicated Pedro Pascal.
And while we laugh Nicolas Cage continues to work tirelessly. Year after year he has released a good collection of titles, some excessive, others very excessive, but always showing that the actor turned meme is not willing to throw in the towel. At least not in reality, since in ‘The Unbearable Weight of a Huge Talent’, a hilarious metanarrative game directed by Tom Gormican, Cage embodies a version of himself that has had enough and, after the latest complications to get a role, decides backing out. But before that, he accepts the multimillion-dollar offer from a fan who wants him to attend his birthday to discover, already in his luxurious villa, that he is a drug trafficker investigated by the CIA.
The interpreter thus gives us a walk through different references of his own while, little by little, the film becomes a functional “buddy movie” in which Cage and Pedro Pascal form a couple that we didn’t know we needed. Delivered to each other, and helped by the involvement of supporting characters like Tiffany Haddish and Paco León, they star in a title that achieves balance by not betting everything on the main joke to also build an interesting story that stands on itself.
Far from the self-conscious reading of ‘Adaptation. The Orchid Thief’ (S. Jonze, 2002), or other games of companions with polyhedral identities such as the equally essential ‘JCVD’ (M. El Mechri, 2008), Cage signs up for this adventure embracing pure comedy and entertainment, which basically is what he has been working on for decades and, judging by the more and more frequent applause for productions such as ‘Blind Fury’ (P. Lussier, 2011), ‘Mom and Dad’ (B. Taylor, 2017 ), ‘Mandy’ (P. Cosmatos, 2018), ‘Color Out of Space’ (R. Stanley, 2019), ‘Prisoners of Ghostland’ (2021, S. Sono), ‘Pig’ (M. Sarnoski, 2021) and this one, has achieved it.
For those who know that Nicolas Cage is worth everything, even the non-ironic
The best: the couple Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal, a success beyond the goal.
The worst: prejudices will detract from it.
