The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Here, again, Asghar Farhadi raising his usual themes and ways, that is, acting as a master of the psycho-thriller with moral substance and the spirit of an algebraic problem. Once again, it exhibits its desire (to a large extent successful) to combine the gravity of the social anthropological with a playful plot approach full of flying goals, with a dramatic architecture of a pure genre story (call it ‘mystery’, ‘suspense’ or as you please); namely: twists and turns, the thrill of immediate assent and slightly ‘chimpún’ revelations.
The Iranian seeks and achieves the respect of the ‘serious’ filmmaker, who lives in the real world, and, at the same time, the favor of an audience more akin to entertainment with ‘hooky’ plots and dramatic forms (not audiovisual) close to juggling . With him one never knows if it was before the chicken or the egg, the Dardennes or Hitchcockif concern for their peers or sadism towards characters conceived to shock those who request something more than realism before a screen weighs more.
For fans of captivating stories without just giving a show
The best: the actors, as always in Farhadi’s films, are superb.
The worst: visually it is one of the most sparse of his films.
