But financial irregularities, rivalries and scandals soon brought down a meticulously built empire.
It would be easy to recommend Showalter’s film based on Jessica Chastain’s incredible performance as the equally incredible Tammy Faye, under pounds of makeup, singing in her own terrific voice. It is also easy to recommend the vision of the documentary of the essential Bailey and Barbato on which it is based, to complete what it leaves in the shadows. But, having said that, it is not difficult at all to do it from the fact that ‘Tammy Faye’s Eyes’ is a biopic irresistibly entertaining, occasionally reaching the brilliance of the best satire and that, in any case, contains everything we like most about melodrama, the soap opera and the chronicle of events.
The history bigger than life of the Bakker televangelist marriage is made of the same stuff that makes up the glories and miseries of the American dream. She has all the makings of a stellar rise and fall saga. But instead of telling us about the world of rock or the mafia, she talks about the most sinister and amazing of American evangelicalism, art and entertainment. And it does so with color, humor, glamor and style.
