Criticism of ‘PARIS, District 13’, the acclaimed new film by Jacques Audiard

Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba and Noémie Merlant star in the love triangle directed by Jacques Audiard.

We sleep in working-class neighborhoods, we inhabit enormous ghost cities, and daily we pass through large spaces built especially to be passed by. However, Jacques Audiard (‘The Sisters brothers’) reminds us, through pure electronic music, that the cement of that impersonal District 13 also opens up as a space for emotion, that good stories do not have to be written in capital letters . In short, that the friction of the skin is never relative and that intimacy knows no suburbs.

To do this, Audiard uses three characters from the anthology ‘Killing and Dying’ by Adrian Tomine, freely intertwined by the wise hands of Céline Sciamma (‘Petite Maman’) and Léa Mysius (‘Ava’). Rasa people, figurines of the lot. Throughout the film Émilie (newcomer Lucie Zhang, Best Actress in Seville), Camille (Makita Samba) and Nora (Noémie Merlant) will only share a bed and frustrations. In their thirties, young people will meet only when they feel most abandoned, and always only to leave again. With the coming and going of their bodies, excited, restless or sad, they will compose a genuine symphony of single life millennial, highs and bad trips included. Here is the greatest virtue of the film: that it is limited to accompanying the leading trio, without attempting to dissect or pontificate in any way about the emotional states they go through. That shakes hands with the characters while they make mistakes, languish and cry. That gets muddy with them and that wanders, chaotic and random as only real people live. Anyway, Audiard’s anthology is so rabidly beardless that we can only forgive its irregularities and embrace it fondly.

Will we return to the suburbs with the arrogance, perhaps tremendous ignorance, of those who do not see life behind a window lit at night? Rone’s energetic synthesizers serve to remind us that even cement has body.

To feel a little less alone in the big city.

The best: some characters free of all prejudice.

The worst: it does not avoid the ups and downs of anthologies.
