Criticism of ‘Argentina, 1985’: The trial that changed history

Ricardo Darín plays Julio Strassera, the prosecutor of the most relevant trial in the country’s democratic history.

Santiago Miter (‘La Cordillera’) brings together the entire cast of Argentine cinema to make a heartfelt exercise of consecration to historical memory: ‘Argentina, 1985’ serves as a tribute to the efforts made by Julio Strassera (Ricardo Darín) and Luis Moreno Ocampo (Peter Lanzani) to sentence those responsible for the greatest genocide in the country’s history, ordered by the Military Government of the dictatorship . Mitre’s film moves forward first with the energy of the prosecutor’s young team’s race against the clock, meticulously underpinned by a vibrant montage and a graceful script.

However, it will soon get stuck under the formula of trial cinema and the seriousness of the witnesses in the gallery, armed with the full intention of underlining the pain until it is exhausted. Miter activates all the levers of exciting cinema, including a tearful monologue by the great Laura Paredes, so that the horror is unmistakable. In times of oblivion and retrogression, perhaps we need all the hype and cymbal to dispel doubts about truths that are still denied us today.

For those who want to cry a lot (and then do something about it)

The best: the film works like a shot.

The worst: its deep classicism is also conservative and uninteresting.
