Tom George directs Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell and Adrien Brody in a Cluedo-driven comedy thriller set in 1950s Hollywood.
As Adrien Brody’s voice affirms at the beginning of ‘Look how they run’: “Seen one whodunit, seen them all”. A brilliant detective, a murdered person, a group of suspects with many reasons to be guilty… Yes, mystery dramas always play the same cards, but this Tom George movie he knows how to disrupt the order enough to find new ways to explore the genre and, at the same time, pay homage to the great master of it: Agatha Christie.
It is true that the comparisons with the writer do not do the film any favors, whose script lacks her sharp ingenuity, nor the closeness in time with the superior ‘Daggers in the back’ (R. Johnson, 2019), but George is right in betting on comedy and metafiction to give a breath of fresh air to the usual mechanisms of Cluedo. Although her fabulous cast is somewhat wasted, Saoirse Ronan shines in the funniest role of her career and her dynamics with a diffident Rockwell are the heart of the story.
For those addicted to playing Cluedo and reading Agatha Christie’s mystery novels
Best: Saoirse Ronan, hilarious as the rookie cop.
The worst: being compared to a teacher she can’t imitate.
