Alejandro Loayza Grisi takes us to the Bolivian highlands to talk about the generational conflict of the elderly who remain in communion with the land.
Everything in this cinematographic gem is surprising. The excellent direction of actors, all non-professionals; the extreme beauty of a photograph and landscapes that elude the temptation of the tourist postcard to integrate naturally into the action; the tenderness that he conveys with his minimalist portrait of a world that is dying out; that it is a debut film; the respect he shows for his characters, and, above all, the dignity they reflect. Sometimes, situations, images, people or frames seem flashes of the best John Ford.
It is not, however, an easy film, beginning because a good part of its dialogues, although few and brief, are in Quechua, subtitled in Spanish. This is an essential ingredient, as are magical realism references, as they cause generational conflict between the elderly, who remain in communion with the land, and the young, who live in the city, alien to their roots. It describes something that may seem distant, but films like ‘Alcarràs’ or ‘As bestas’ remind us that it is not so far away.
A good choice for movie buffs and adult-themed movie audiences
The best: the close-ups of the performers’ faces.
The worst: that this wonder can go unnoticed by theaters.
