Criticism of ‘Don’t look into the eyes’, solitary confinement and its monsters

Félix Viscarret adapts Juan José Millás with Paco León, Leonor Watling, Àlex Brendemühl and Juan Diego Botto in a film awarded at Seminci.

Here is a film as unusual as it is elusive, a kind of horror story, a metaphor of alienation, a moral fable… inside a closet. Félix Viscarret adapts the novel ‘From the Shadow’ by Juan José Millás and composes a very uncomfortable story about solitary confinement and its monsters, about loneliness as an endemic evil through a character (played by a Paco León as disturbing as he is minimalist in his gesture) who becomes a ghost who spies from his hiding place on the secrets of a marriage and creates imaginary ties with his wife (Leonor Watling).

Viscarret takes his protagonist’s distorted point of view of reality to its ultimate consequences and uses the planning of each sequence to show his perspective, mixing a sick everyday life with the dreamlike element, reformulating the concept of run away in an imaginative and perverse way to talk about hidden desire, fears and frustrations, the longing for recognition and the need to feel.

For lovers of movies that generate strangeness, bother and raise questions

The best: his own status as a rare bird and Paco León, in his most unexpected role.

    The worst: the imaginary interviews.
