Criticism of ‘Operation Fortune: The Great Hoax’, the new Guy Ritchie

The director reunites for the fifth time with Jason Statham in this spy story that also stars Hugh Grant.

With 007 wound up, Tom Cruise aged and the action thriller drowning in tears, family dramas and unlikely working mothers torn between motherhood and martial arts, Guy Ritchie’s new toy is a joyous return to old formulas that rarely fail. This is how an action film is made: with humor, international sets, solid actors, one-piece roles and fast-paced editing (Ritchie style, a little more content than usual).

This update of the underrated ‘Operation UNCLE’ offers us something unusual today: pure entertainment. Simple and sophisticated at the same time, it has the background and almost the form of Roger Moore’s Bonds, with a touch of the tradition of ‘The Persuaders’, ‘The Saint’, ‘Mission Impossible’ or even ‘The A-Team’, and a lot of actioneer from the 80s and 90s. Whoever sees it, put all pretense aside. There is no romance or reflections on family relationships, bereavement or responsibility. No message or moral. Just fun, action, on liners and veterans Cary Elwes and Hugh Grant having a great time. Nothing more and nothing less.

For those nostalgic for the superthriller of yesteryear.

The best: its cast, with a priceless Hugh Grant as a villain.

The worst: it may be too 20th century for today’s audience.
