Criticism of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, the new dimension of Marvel

Benedict Cumberbatch leads the cast of the film with which Sam Raimi returns to directing.

Who knows if in one of those trips to alternative universes that form the path of not yellow tiles, but red, towards this new Oz that revisits Sam Raimi, the imaginative director that we discover in Infernal possession come to one in which to reconcile with his reviled, beginning with himself, Spider man 3. Who knows if he would look at it differently (with a third eye perhaps?) and accept that this arachnid excess branded as frivolous was not very far from what he has exorcised in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: the eternal struggle with our alternative selves and against a destiny that is woven like a spider’s web or like spells drawn in the air. Like the pivotal Liam Neeson of darkman, Raimi’s first and still essential foray into the world of superheroes and comics, that dark, jealous and insecure Peter Parker, and this Stephen Strange condemned to always lose the love of his life whatever life he has access, the three characters never know what their true face is and wander under different artificial faces sacrificing themselves for the sake of becoming the savior of humanity.

Kevin Feige has presented Sam Raimi with the best gift the author of Drag Me to Hellthe Marvel cinematic universe and us the fans: a blank check for him to return to the Stan Lee comics (and Steve Ditko: the entire conclusion in the temple and the ruined Strange mansion) with that tragic breath that was even present in Oz, a fantastic world, film with which this new adventure of Doctor Strange has many elements in common: the vindication of his evil witch, the shadow of a Dorita and a magician – like Strange? – that overlap and the inexistence of a perfect world.

Yes, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness it is a tragedy, specifically that of a mother (in the plural) who is capable of destroying reality and unreality by sheltering her children. The tragedy of a lonely hero with the weight of responsibility for his past, present and future acts, and also that of an adolescent who is the sum of both: someone in search of happiness and a home that do not exist (like América Chávez does not exist in the rest of the worlds of the multiverse) and someone still unable to manage their power and their guilt. Almost stripped of the humor akin to marvelite productions (except for that old friend) but rich in details that comic book fans will enjoy, Sam Raimi’s film encloses this multi-franchise in the cabin in the forest of Infernal possession, takes the iconography and the weird spirit (already in the comics of the doctor strange) from terrifyingly dead (that shot from inside a clock!) and especially of The army of darkness. It is a symphony (literally in that wonderful duel between two versions of Strange) of horror and fantasy that in its final stretch reaches heights of excellence, of visual style (Raimi never betrays himself) so far not seen in the MCU. Not to mention a simply superb Danny Elfman.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, and Sam Raimi and Michael Waldron in the script, he is even capable of destroying his numerous and surprising (although overwhelmingly logical) cameos to reconstruct them in a new reality that is the one that opens the way to an Oz that will bear the name and the number of a new phase of the MCU, and that basically will be a new face of that Darkman lost in the crowd (of superhero blockbusters) but with a classic and tragic soul inside.

For dark casters Sam Raimi in the Marvel Universe.

The best: a Wanda Maximoff (splendid Elizabeth Olsen) caught in the pain.

The worst: that when they read this they have already discovered the surprises of the film.
