Director Romain Gavras has released his new action satire film Sacrifice in cinemas, presenting a story of eco-activists taking celebrities hostage in Greece.
The picture balances sharp satire, fast-paced action, and philosophical drama, delivered in the director's signature dynamic music-video style. In Russian distribution, the movie has been released under the title Victim of Circumstances because local distributors preferred a softer phrasing to distinguish it from Soviet auteur Andrei Tarkovsky's 1986 Cannes Grand Prix-winning masterpiece The Sacrifice.
The central premise follows a chaotic hostage situation that erupts during an exclusive gathering in southern Europe, examining how quickly established ways of life can be upended.
Volcanic gala hostage crisis
The story opens at a high-society charity gala held in an underground mine at the foot of an active volcano in Greece. Guests include Mike Tyler, played by Chris Evans, a self-absorbed actor whose career is declining and who is desperate to revive his public image.
As half-naked dancers portray Mother Nature and Daughter Nature on stage, radical environmental activists storm the venue. The group is led by Joan, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who wears wild curls reminiscent of climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.
Convinced that a catastrophic volcanic eruption is imminent, the activists announce that three celebrities must be sacrificed to save the world. They take hostage Tyler, deep-sea mining billionaire Ben Bracken, played by Vincent Cassel, and Katy, played by Ambika Mod, an actress who was portraying Daughter Nature on stage.
The siege quickly descends into violence and chaos across underground tunnels and Greek bays. The film features gunshots, fistfights, the severed hand of a socialite, subterranean chases, and high-speed boat pursuits, while John Malkovich plays Joan's unkempt father who attempts to save her from her own radicalism.
From movie star to real hero
The core narrative engine revolves around Mike Tyler, who arrives at the gala in a limousine alongside his agent. Tyler attends the event with egocentric motivation, treating activism as a performance to win back public attention rather than a genuine effort to help the environment. Evans parodies his own screen image as an ideal superhero, highlighting the absurdity of celebrity activism.
When the siege begins, the event is broadcast live on news networks and social media platforms as the top global story, triggering widespread public hysteria. Under pressure from millions of live viewers, Tyler realizes that his usual posturing will not work and that he cannot simply recite lines from a script.
Faced with choices between self-preservation and protecting others, Tyler experiences a shift from vanity to empathy. He begins to view those around him as real human beings with their own fears, developing a close bond with Katy. At the climax, prior to jumping into the volcano's crater, he admits that he is not all-powerful and does not know how to fix the situation. His speech transforms from rehearsed statements about inspiring others to simple, direct promises to rescue Katy.
Greek mythology and family roots
The director's incorporation of Greek themes stems directly from his upbringing. Romain Gavras is the son of celebrated Greek-French filmmaker Costa-Gavras, known for political thrillers such as Z and Missing.
Gavras said he was raised in a filmmaking household where family members firmly believed movies could change the world or how people perceive it. He explained that his Greek father read him ancient mythology while banning Walt Disney productions from their home, allowing him to grow up on tales of heroic feats, figures plunging into fire, and the blacksmith god Hephaestus forging weapons inside a volcano.
Discussing the central themes, Gavras questioned what occurs when radical idealism meets reality and vanity. He stated that he believes changing the world begins with a selfless leap of faith, comparing the decision to fall in love or fight for a cause to a metaphorical jump into a volcano. He added that cinema represents his attempt to make sense of an absurd, cruel, and beautiful world in a single frame, expressing hope that viewers would experience both chaos and wonder.
Social commentary and star ensemble
Through its provocative plot, the screenplay parodies several contemporary social issues. The film examines the cult of fame, portraying public applause not as admiration but as a sentence where celebrity status becomes a dangerous curse. The story also targets corporate greed through billionaire Ben Bracken, a personal enemy of Tyler and his wife Gloria, played by Salma Hayek. Bracken aggressively pushes deep-sea mining projects for financial gain.
Furthermore, the narrative critiques Western environmental activism, representing Joan's teenage followers as fanatical radicals who replace rational ecological solutions with violent methods. The piece highlights society's dependence on technology, showing hostages and captors holding smartphones while rehearsing speeches for live broadcasts.
Critical response and box office context
Russian publication Vechernyaya Moskva noted that while the film provides an engaging cinema experience, it struggles with genre confusion as it attempts to combine absurd comedy with serious social commentary. The review stated that the ending feels unconvincing and the satire remains on the surface, with Gavras's dynamic music-video editing style at times overshadowing the core message that Earth is a living entity requiring thoughtful stewardship.
Despite these criticisms, the publication concluded that the cinematic provocation will engage moviegoers. The release of Sacrifice comes alongside another major cinematic event, with Christopher Nolan's blockbuster The Odyssey also recently arriving on cinema screens.
