Cristiano Ronaldo is set to marry Georgina Rodriguez next weekend at Funchal cathedral on the island of Madeira, where he grew up, according to reports.
The footballer, 41, and Georgina, 32, are said to be tying the knot at the cathedral before moving the celebration to the five-star Savoy Palace hotel for the reception. A source told The Sun that guests at the hotel have been informed two floors and several bar areas will be out of use on Friday and Saturday.
An earlier report had claimed the couple were set to wed at the Quinta da Regaleira estate in Sintra this weekend, but those rumours were cast in doubt after the estate remained open to the public.
A Sentimental Return
Funchal is Ronaldo’s hometown and birthplace. A bronze statue stands there in his honour, and he has a hotel named after him in the city. Despite an estimated net worth of between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion, his connection to the island is deeply personal. He grew up in poverty, sharing a room with his siblings, and left home at age 11 to join Sporting Lisbon.
In the lead-up to the reported wedding, both Ronaldo and Georgina have been photographed showing off large diamond rings after flying to Portugal. Georgina shared several posts on social media, including beach photos and a family shot with Ronaldo and his son Junior, 16, in which her engagement ring was prominently visible.
The Proposal
The pair got engaged last August after eight years of dating. Georgina announced the news on Instagram with the caption, “Yes, I do.”
Ronaldo later told Piers Morgan the proposal happened at around 1am and was unplanned. He said he had a friend pass him the ring to give to Georgina, but two of his children walked in at that moment and announced what was about to happen. He said it felt like the right moment, even though he had not intended to propose that night.
Ronaldo also told Morgan he had put considerable effort into finding the ring, saying Georgina had asked for a ring with a fine stone and that he worked hard until he found what she would love.
Ronaldo previously told Morgan he intended to marry Georgina after this year’s World Cup. Portugal were eliminated in the round of 16 by Spain. He said he planned to marry her because she is the person he loves most, not only because she is the mother of his children.
Their Family
The couple have daughters Alana and Bella together and welcomed twins Eva Maria and Mateo through surrogacy. Bella had a twin brother named Angel, who died shortly after birth. Ronaldo also has a son, Cristiano Jr., from an earlier relationship.
Georgina met Ronaldo in 2016 while working as a sales assistant at a Gucci shop in Madrid. The couple relocated to Saudi Arabia in 2022 after Ronaldo signed for Al-Nassr.
