RTVE Renews Barrio Esperanza and Moves Cine de Barrio

RTVE is renewing its social comedy Barrio Esperanza for a second season while moving its long-running movie program Cine de barrio to La 2. The Spanish public broadcaster confirmed that Barrio Esperanza will continue following a premiere on La 1 that drew a 15.3 percent screen share and 1,611,000 viewers.

Filming for the second season of the acidic social comedy is already underway. Actress María Castro, known for her role in La Promesa, is joining the main cast alongside lead actors Mariona Terés, Alejo Sauras, and Mariano Peña.

Format changes for Cine de barrio

According to a report by El País, Cine de barrio will leave La 1 and transfer to La 2 with a total redesign. The historic show will remove its studio set, presenter, and commentators. Instead, it will feature movies preceded by a short report lasting under ten minutes to provide context for each film.

The program originally debuted on La 2 in 1995 before shifting to La 1 months later. This new phase coincides with the show marking 30 years on the air. Moving the cinema series will free up weekend afternoon slots on La 1 for a potential new live magazine show, while La 2 retains RTVE's classic Spanish film brand.
