Italian junior rugby champion Ruggero Canocchi has died in hospital following a microcar crash in L'Aquila, in central Italy's Abruzzo region.
The 15-year-old teenager was driving near a gym on 14 September when his microcar veered off the road and collided with a tree, according to a report by news outlet Need To Know.
Emergency responders and police officers arrived at the crash site to find Canocchi alive and conscious despite having sustained severe physical trauma. Paramedics rushed him to hospital, but doctors were unable to stop internal bleeding resulting from his injuries, and he died the following day.
Italian police have opened an investigation to determine the precise cause of the accident and why the vehicle left the roadway.
Microcar laws and safety regulations in Italy
Canocchi was operating a microcar, a lightweight category of vehicle that Italian traffic regulations permit teenagers to drive from the age of 14. Under Italian law, microcars are subject to a strict maximum speed limit of 45 kilometres per hour.
Classified in Europe as light quadricycles, microcars are compact vehicles powered by small internal combustion engines or electric motors. They are popular among Italian adolescents as an enclosed, four-wheeled alternative to mopeds and motor scooters for daily travel to school and sports facilities.
Rising star with Rugby Experience club
Canocchi was considered a rising star in Italian youth rugby, playing for the youth squad of the Rugby Experience club. In June 2025, he helped lead the team to victory in the Italian national Under-16 championship.
Rugby Experience is based in L'Aquila, the regional capital of Abruzzo. The city has a deep historic connection to Italian rugby union, with local youth academies developing young athletes to compete in national competitions under the Italian Rugby Federation.
The tragedy comes shortly after another fatal road incident involving a young athlete. In Brazil, an up-and-coming football player for club Mauá FC died in a fatal crash while traveling in a car driven by his father.
