Sandra Bullock has revealed a cryptic new tattoo dedicated to her children during the European premiere of her latest film, Practical Magic 2, in London.
The Oscar winner stepped out at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on Thursday night wearing an off-the-shoulder leopard-print Givenchy gown that exposed the fresh ink on the back of her left shoulder.
The body art features the letters 'LB' written in flowery cursive text, followed by a superscript '2'. The Daily Mail can reveal the design is a tribute to her 16-year-old son, Louis, and 12-year-old daughter, Laila Bullock.
Eagle-eyed fans quickly spotted the ambiguous design, with many taking to social media to speculate that it referred to her family. Some guessed it might also be a tribute to her late partner, Bryan Randall.
Randall died at the age of 57 in August 2023 after a private three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Bullock and the late model were in a relationship for eight years prior to his death.
The premiere also marked the first time Bullock's co-star, Stockard Channing, had attended a red-carpet event in two years, following a move to London for a more "reclusive" life.
Discussing her partner's illness
The red-carpet appearance comes after Bullock opened up earlier this week about how she handled Randall's diagnosis with her children. Speaking on Monday's episode of the SmartLess podcast, she explained that Louis and Laila were "completely aware" as he battled the disease.
"Oh, completely aware. Absolutely aware, because eventually, once there is a situation where you're bedridden, we all have to go there," she said.
"It was in my house, and I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it," Bullock added.
The actress noted that her children were "very astute" as they watched Randall become increasingly ill.
"They could see. They have eyes. And they are very, very astute kids," she said. "They not only see the physical change, [but] there's a behavior that changes in all of us."
How her children coped
Bullock recalled that her two children reacted to the difficult situation in different ways, explaining that she utilised a different side of their house to give them space when they requested it.
"Louis handled it very differently than Laila," she said. "About two years before Bryan passed, he saw it was a dynamic that wasn't healthy for him to be around. So, he's very evolved. He's like, 'You know what? I'm here for you.'"
She added that her eldest child "smartly disengaged himself and said, 'This is a safer place for me to sit.' And I said, 'Absolutely, you go.'"
Bullock expressed relief at his decision, as she did not want him taking on adult responsibilities. "I didn't want him to become the man of the family at that age. My job [was] to be both at that time," she said.
"I want him to be a kid during a pandemic when everything is already f***ed anyway and people are suffering everywhere. So me asking for help, I felt the guilt because everyone else was already suffering. But he chose to just be there and support and help me on the things that were easy for me."
Her daughter, however, spent more time around Randall during his illness. "Laila, on the other hand, was more bonded until about six months out," Bullock recalled.
"And then she says, 'Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?' And I said, 'Absolutely. But if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.'"
Time away from the spotlight
Bullock spent about six years lying low following Randall's passing. The couple were first romantically linked in 2015 and made their public debut together at the wedding of Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux in August of that year.
After his death, the actress prioritised her family before eventually returning to work to film Practical Magic 2 last year.
An insider told People magazine in April that Bullock "spent a lot of time healing" and being with her children at home.
"After everything she went through with Bryan, she needed time to care for herself," the source said. "She needed to ensure that she and her kids were in the best possible place for her to go back to work."
