São Paulo's electronic music scene is setting global nightlife trends and inspiring major venues in Berlin, according to Shotgun Brasil founder Carol Mattos.
Frequent reports across social media platforms have compared the diversity and energy of nightlife in São Paulo to Berlin, Germany's capital and a long standing global reference for electronic music. South America's largest metropolis now attracts top international acts while offering diverse options across multiple subgenres.
Mattos, who serves as sales manager at the Brazilian branch of event ticketing platform Shotgun and works as a disc jockey, said the Brazilian city is doing more than just becoming a new Berlin. She noted that nightlife organizers in Berlin are actively looking to São Paulo for inspiration, with Brazilian artists and musical references being exported internationally.
She observed that German clubgoers can rarely attend a night out in Berlin without hearing Brazilian funk mixed into electronic DJ sets. While Brazil has long held an influential position in global music, Mattos stressed that international interest in São Paulo's sound has reached an unprecedented peak.
Infrastructure and diversity in nightlife
The strength of the São Paulo market relies on its cultural diversity and professional production standards, Mattos explained. Parties, artist collectives, specialized clubs, and large festivals across the city contribute to a robust ecosystem designed for varied audiences.
She emphasized that event creators are increasingly focused on high quality infrastructure, artistic curation, and overall guest experience. Event organizers and partygoers alike now demand polished production, creating higher standards across venues throughout the city.
São Paulo, home to more than 11 million residents in southeastern Brazil, has established itself as the continent's primary hub for nightlife innovation. At the same time, Berlin has maintained its status as Europe's techno capital since the 1990s, making the shift in influence between the two cities significant for the global music industry.
Algorithmic event discovery and venue expansion
To help clubgoers navigate this expanding market, Shotgun focuses on direct event recommendations paired with curated event listings. The ticketing platform recently secured an agreement to become the official ticket provider for Dr. Banana Club, one of São Paulo's prominent underground electronic venues.
Dr. Banana Club joins a growing roster of venues and independent parties using the service in the city. Shotgun uses an automated recommendation system that analyzes past event attendance and friend networks to suggest matching events, ranging from premium club nights to grassroots collective parties.
Mattos pointed out that event producers face growing difficulties relying solely on Instagram to promote gatherings. Organic reach on social networks has declined, forcing organizers to spend heavily on paid advertisements and sponsored posts to reach existing followers.
By contrast, Shotgun notifies all platform followers directly whenever a producer lists a new event. Mattos noted that this system restores the transparent event discovery features that Facebook previously offered before social feed algorithms altered how updates reach users.
