Scarlett Johansson stars as a homicide detective in the first teaser trailer for the upcoming detective horror movie The Exorcist: Martyrs.
The film follows single mother Julie Miller as she investigates a new series of murders connected to her past, 13 years after she neutralized a notorious satanic serial killer.
Her investigation takes a perilous turn when her 12-year-old son becomes the target of a terrifying demonic force. Viewers have been promised a radical reimagining of the story of demonic possession.
Johansson leads the project following her acclaimed roles in major Hollywood blockbusters and dramas. The Oscar-nominated American actress is widely recognized for playing Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as her performances in Lost in Translation, The Prestige, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Jojo Rabbit, and Jurassic World Rebirth, along with upcoming appearances in The Batman Part II.
Director Mike Flanagan leads supernatural horror project
The horror feature is directed by Mike Flanagan, an acclaimed filmmaker recognized for his work in the horror genre. Flanagan has previously directed feature films including Oculus, Hush, Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck. His extensive television work includes horror series such as The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, The Fall of the House of Usher, and Carrie.
The production features an ensemble supporting cast that includes Jacobi Jupe, Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, Sasha Calle, John Leguizamo, Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, and Samantha Sloyan.
The cast brings together prominent international performers with notable feature film backgrounds. Ejiofor, an Academy Award nominee for 12 Years a Slave, also starred in Doctor Strange, Venom: The Last Dance, The Life of Chuck, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and Backrooms. Fishburne, an Oscar nominee known for playing Morpheus in The Matrix franchise, has appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Amateur, and the John Wick series. Lane's film credits include Chaplin, Judge Dredd, and Man of Steel.
Leguizamo previously appeared in Super Mario Bros., The Menu, The Odyssey, and the John Wick franchise. Calle starred in The Flash, On Swift Horses, and the television series Sugar, while Jupe recently appeared in Hamnet and Victorian Psychopath. Gugino has starred in Spy Kids, Sin City, Watchmen, and Sucker Punch.
Frequent collaborators return for new Exorcist entry
In keeping with his established filmmaking tradition, Flanagan has brought back a substantial number of actors from his previous projects to join the ensemble for the new film.
Returning cast members include Kohli, Linklater, Gugino, Sloyan, and Siegel, all of whom appeared in earlier Flanagan television productions such as The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Linklater also appeared in Fargo, Legion, and Gen V, while Sloyan and Siegel both featured in The Life of Chuck and Carrie.
Siegel is married to Flanagan and has collaborated with the director across multiple feature films, including Oculus, Hush, and Gerald's Game. The Exorcist: Martyrs is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on March 11, 2027.
