The first dubbed trailer has dropped for Fjord, the drama that won the top prize at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The film is rated 18+ and is set for release on October 29.
The story follows the Gheorghiu family, Romanian immigrants with five children who settle in a small Norwegian town by a fjord. Their conservative religious values clash with the local liberal way of life. When the eldest daughter arrives at school with bruises, teachers alert child protective services, which removes the children from the family while it investigates whether they were abused.
Sebastian Stan, known for I, Tonya and the Avengers films, plays the father. Renate Reinsve, of Sentimental Value and The Worst Person in the World, plays his wife. The two previously played a couple in the 2024 drama A Different Man, for which Stan won a Golden Globe.
Director Cristian Mungiu previously won Cannes' Palme d'Or in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and the best director prize there in 2016 for Graduation. He has said that Fjord was inspired by real cases once reported in the press, touching on child-rearing, migration, and clashes between cultural values.
