Silvana Armani Takes Over Womenswear After Uncle's Death

Silvana Armani has taken over womenswear creative direction at Armani, promising to avoid the workaholic lifestyle of her late uncle Giorgio Armani.

Silvana Armani Takes Over Womenswear After Uncle's Death

Silvana Armani has taken over as creative director of womenswear at Italian fashion house Armani following the death of her uncle, founder Giorgio Armani.

Speaking in an interview with fashion trade publication Women's Wear Daily, the designer acknowledged that taking sole charge initially caused her some fear, but said working alongside her longstanding team helped ease the transition. She added that while she respects her uncle's legacy, she is determined not to replicate his total devotion to work, noting that he sacrificed friends, love, and personal time for his career.

Giorgio Armani founded his namesake fashion house in Milan in 1975, building it into one of Italy's most prominent luxury empires known for clean lines and tailored suits. Two months before his death at the age of 91, the legendary designer stated that he had never feared the physical signs of aging on his face or body.

Early career and entry into fashion

Before joining the family business, Silvana Armani worked as a fashion model for prominent Italian designers including Walter Albini and Krizia. However, severe shyness made runway appearances difficult for her, and she recalled biting her nails so badly before fashion shows that she injured her hands.

When she eventually joined Armani, her family surname did not secure her an immediate position in the design studio. She began her career answering calls at the company switchboard, joking that nepotism did not exist within the firm.

She gradually took on broader responsibilities before beginning her formal training as a designer in 1980 within the womenswear division of Emporio Armani, a diffusion line launched by the house to offer contemporary ready to wear collections.

Working relationship and creative clashes

Silvana Armani spent 45 years working alongside her uncle, a collaboration that involved frequent professional debate. She recalled that she never hesitated to express her opinions, even when her uncle rejected her ideas at first. Giorgio Armani would often dismiss her suggestions initially, only to implement them later without immediately admitting she had been right.

Beyond their professional relationship, she described her uncle as a father figure whom she regularly consulted for guidance on personal matters. From her decades working at his side, she adopted his core design principle of creating wearable, practical clothing that continually moves forward.

Her uncle was also known for strong opinions on textiles, with Silvana noting that he strongly disliked cotton because he regarded it as a fabric that was too humble for high fashion.

Personal balance and animal shelter

Despite her commitment to the brand, Silvana Armani explained that she felt it was essential to maintain a boundary between her personal life and her work. Unlike her uncle, whose daily routine revolved entirely around the company, she sought out a private sanctuary away from Milan.

Nearly every weekend, she travels to her country home in Casteggio, a rural town located near Pavia in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. There, she focuses on her personal interests and cares for her three pet dogs.

Her passion for animals led her to establish a sanctuary near Pavia that currently provides shelter for around 50 animals. The project initially caused concern for Giorgio Armani, who worried that her dedication to animal welfare might draw her attention away from the fashion house.

Silvana Armani reassured her uncle at the time that she would remain dedicated to her role at the company, a promise she kept throughout his lifetime.

Now holding the principal creative role for womenswear, she emphasized that her fundamental routine has not changed significantly, even as media attention intensifies around her leadership. She remains committed to preserving her personal life and sanctuary in the Italian countryside alongside her increased executive responsibilities.
