Martin Herlihy is leaving Saturday Night Live after five seasons, according to The Hollywood Reporter, making him the latest cast member to depart the sketch show ahead of its return this month.
The 27-year-old comedian worked primarily as a writer on SNL but also frequently appeared on camera as a performer.
Herlihy is the son of Tim Herlihy, a longtime SNL writer who served as one of the show's head writers in the mid-1990s.
He was also part of the sketch comedy trio Please Don't Destroy alongside Ben Marshall and John Higgins, known for its recurring pre-taped digital shorts on the show.
Higgins left SNL last year amid a wide-ranging cast shakeup, while Marshall was promoted to a full-time cast member.
NBC Has Not Responded
A request for comment on Herlihy's exit had not been answered by NBC at the time of reporting.
Fineman's Departure in July
Herlihy's exit follows that of longtime cast member Chloe Fineman, who left the show in July after seven seasons.
"It's really hard to leave SNL but it does feel like the right time," Fineman said in a statement at the time. "I'm going to miss it a lot. But the people who work there are my family and that place is my home, and I know I'll never be too far away."
Fineman added that the job had been "the greatest privilege of my life" and said she remained "forever in debt" to SNL creator Lorne Michaels, who has run the show since it first aired in 1975.
"Every day I was lucky enough to be surrounded by the best people in the business, and I was constantly amazed watching them work," she wrote.
Fineman joined the cast in 2019 for the show's 45th season and was promoted to a full-time cast member two seasons later, in 2021.
A String of Cast Departures
Herlihy and Fineman are the latest in a series of SNL stars to leave the show over the past year. Bowen Yang quit last December to make his Broadway debut and to keep focusing on his podcast, Las Culturistas.
The show underwent a major shakeup following its landmark 50th season, with cast members Heidi Gardner, Devon Walker, Emil Wakim and Michael Longfellow all departing.
What Comes Next for Season 52
Saturday Night Live returns to screens on September 26 for its 52nd season. New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson will host the premiere episode, with global girl group KATSEYE serving as the musical guest.
According to NBC, actress Dakota Johnson will then host the October 3 episode. Comedian Shane Gillis and actress Inde Navarrette are also set to host upcoming episodes, with Rosalia and Gracie Abrams booked as musical guests.
