Spider-Man: New Day, the latest Marvel and Sony film, has become a genuine box office sensation. The film earned $355 million in its first weekend in North America, the second-biggest opening in American box office history behind Avengers: Endgame, which took in $357 million during its 2019 debut weekend, according to Variety.
The new chapter in the Peter Parker story is the first film since Endgame to come close to the $300 million mark in a single weekend. The film still has a chance to set an absolute record once final earnings are tallied.
The success was not limited to the United States. Outside the country, the film brought in another $573 million, pushing its worldwide total to $927 million. That makes Spider-Man: New Day the second-biggest global opening ever, again behind Avengers: Endgame, which earned $1.2 billion in its opening weekend.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige called the film's launch "truly phenomenal" and said the result confirms audiences' lasting connection to Marvel's characters.
Until recently, Hollywood had doubted whether Marvel could recapture its former hold on audiences. After the story arc closed with Avengers: Endgame, interest in superhero films waned, and several of the studio's projects failed to meet box office expectations.
Why Spider-Man: New Day Is Succeeding
The film, made on a budget of around $225 million, received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. It holds a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while CinemaScore audiences gave it the highest possible grade, an "A".
The film set its records even without IMAX screenings, since every IMAX auditorium was booked showing Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
Sony's film group chairman Tom Rothman said the film's success was tied not only to the scale of the franchise but also to its central theme of friendship and human relationships.
Nolan's Odyssey Also Riding High
Meanwhile, Nolan's The Odyssey is also delivering strong results, having already passed $911 million in worldwide earnings. Both films are expected to soon join the ranks of 2026 releases that have crossed the $1 billion mark.
Hollywood is hoping that hits like these, along with upcoming releases such as Dune 3 and Avengers: Doomsday, will help the film industry return annual box office revenue to $10 billion for the first time since the pandemic.
