Star Trek: Shadow Frontier will feature former USS Enterprise officer Ro Laren as its lead character, stepping away from Jean-Luc Picard for a new game.
Developer Bloober Team is preparing the survival horror title for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
During much of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Jean-Luc Picard served as the central reference point for the crew of the USS Enterprise-D. While other crew members occasionally led individual episodes, Picard remained the primary hero of the series. Shadow Frontier will shift that dynamic by putting Ro Laren front and center.
Distress call on an unknown planet
In the new adventure, Ro Laren responds to a distress call that draws her to an unfamiliar world. Her starship suffers a forced landing on the surface, leaving her stranded in a deeply disturbing environment.
Upon exploring the alien planet, Ro discovers a graveyard of destroyed spaceships. The surrounding landscape presents immediate danger, populated by hostile alien creatures and a corrupted local ecosystem.
Psychological horror and personal memories
Beyond the physical threats on the surface, Ro must confront a mysterious entity with the power to manipulate both her body and her mind. The entity probes her thoughts, making her own memories a core component of the survival experience.
Her complex backstory and personal inner conflicts will be leveraged by the entity as psychological tests. Creators are using this premise to examine aspects of her history that could not be explored during her appearances in the original television series.
The legacy of Ro Laren in Star Trek
Ro Laren was first introduced during the fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, portrayed by American actress Michelle Forbes. As a Bajoran Starfleet officer who survived the brutal Cardassian occupation of her homeworld, Ro was characterized by her tough exterior, sharp intellect and frequent clashes with Starfleet authority.
Despite her friction with military discipline, Captain Picard became a mentor figure to Ro aboard the Enterprise-D. Her character arc became one of the most celebrated storylines in nineties science fiction television, culminating in her decision to defect from Starfleet to join the Maquis resistance movement.
A major genre shift for the franchise
The choice of protagonist accompanies a dramatic shift in gameplay style. Shadow Frontier is built from the ground up as a survival horror game, representing a major departure for a franchise that has rarely ventured into horror beyond standalone television episodes and feature films.
Polish development studio Bloober Team brings extensive genre experience to the project, having previously created psychological horror titles such as Layers of Fear, Observer, The Medium and the remake of Silent Hill 2. Their approach to Shadow Frontier emphasizes resource management, psychological tension and atmospheric dread.
Release date and target platforms
The upcoming title offers Ro Laren an opportunity to step out of a secondary role and take complete ownership of her own storyline. Star Trek: Shadow Frontier is scheduled to launch at an unspecified time in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
