Statham, Evans And Luntik Lead August's Cinema Releases

Russian cinemas will roll out a run of new releases in August, ranging from body horror to family animation, including films starring Jason Statham, known for action franchises such as "The Transporter" and "Crank", and Chris Evans, best known for playing Captain America in Marvel's Avengers films.

The month began with two family titles, "The Last Warrior: Kolobok" and "Smeshariki Across the Universes". Later releases through August range from horror and action to a film that opened the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.

'Eat, Pray, Diet' brings body horror on August 13

Fans of last year's buzzed-about horror releases "Behind the Scenes of Reality" and "Obsession" can look forward to another genre film in the style of "The Substance". "Eat, Pray, Diet" opens in Russian cinemas on August 13.

The film follows Hana, a medical student who grew up in a family with disordered eating habits and struggles with an eating disorder herself. When she begins a new weight-loss experiment, she starts to be haunted by a "hungry ghost", a figure drawn from Buddhist and Taoist mythology that represents insatiable desire. The film explores the boundary between psychological and bodily horror. It premiered in early 2026 at the Sundance Film Festival, the influential American showcase for independent cinema.

Chris Evans leads an all-star cast in 'Victim of Circumstance'

The action thriller "Victim of Circumstance" opens in Russia on August 20, starring Evans alongside Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, John Malkovich and Anya Taylor-Joy. In the film, a lavish charity gala turns into a nightmare when a group of environmental activists storms the event and issues an ultimatum: three of the guests must be sacrificed, or humanity will be destroyed.

Cannes opener 'Electric Kiss' and Statham's 'Rebellion'

Also opening August 20 is "Electric Kiss", the film that opened the 79th Cannes Film Festival, one of the world's most prestigious film festivals, held annually in France. Directed by Pierre Salvadori, the story is set in Paris in 1928, where the painter Antoine Balestro, unable to paint since his wife's death, consults a medium in hopes of feeling her presence again. Instead he speaks with Suzanne, a poor circus performer who runs one fake seance after another before falling in love with him.

Jason Statham arrives in Russian cinemas on August 27 with the action film "Rebellion", playing Cole Reid, a former special forces operative and police officer now working in private security. When Reid witnesses the murder of his billionaire boss, he is framed for the killing and becomes the prime suspect, forcing him on the run to track down the real culprit himself.

'Luntik' sequel closes out the month

The animated film "Luntik: The Dark Side of the Moon" also opens on August 27. It is a direct sequel to the 2024 feature "Luntik: Return Home" and follows the character as he searches for his father, who once vanished on the far side of the Moon.
