Steve Jobs' Children Build Careers Without Direct Fortune

The family of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has built separate careers in philanthropy, equestrian sports, venture capital, and literature 15 years after his death left a fortune of more than $10.5 billion. According to French celebrity news website purepeople.com, the division of the estate revealed both the philosophical principles and the personal complexities surrounding the tech icon.

Jobs passed away in October 2011 at the age of 56. The visionary entrepreneur built his multi-billion-dollar fortune through Apple Inc., the California-based technology company he co-founded that revolutionized personal computing and mobile devices. He also generated vast wealth through his 1986 acquisition of Pixar Studios from Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas, an animation company that was later bought by The Walt Disney Company.

The distribution of the estate directed the vast majority of Jobs' wealth to his wife, Laurene Powell, and his eldest daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs. Brennan-Jobs was born in 1978 during his previous relationship with Chrisann Brennan. She received $20 million from the fortune, an amount that served as compensation for years during her childhood when Jobs provided no official recognition or financial support.

Distribution of the Jobs Estate

The rest of the multi-billion-dollar estate was inherited by Powell, whom Jobs married in March 1991. In contrast, the three children Jobs shared with Powell, Reed, Erin, and Eve, received little to no direct inheritance. French portal purepeople.com reported that the choice was not random, but the result of a deliberate philosophy shared by both parents.

Steve Jobs and Laurene Powell both held the belief that an overabundance of easy wealth could compromise the character, discipline, and ambition of their descendants. Powell later explained that her intention was to redistribute the accumulated fortune in a sustainable manner to improve the lives of communities around the world, rather than build generational wealth for her heirs.

Powell, now 62 years old, ranks among the wealthiest people in the world with a net worth of $16.1 billion. In 2023, she earned a spot on the TIME 100 list of influential global leaders for turning her late husband's inheritance into an active instrument for social change.

Through her work with Emerson Collective, an organization dedicated to social reform, educational equity, and environmental initiatives, Powell has focused her resources on public interest projects rather than simple wealth preservation.

Careers of the Jobs Children

Despite growing up without massive direct inheritances, the children of Steve Jobs have established successful individual careers, suggesting that the absence of easy money served as an advantage. Reed, 35, has led Emerson Collective since 2015. In 2023, he founded Yosemite, a venture capital firm aimed at transforming biotechnology and medical innovation.

Eve Jobs, 28, forged a career as a high-fashion model and an elite equestrian athlete. She achieved a fifth-place ranking in international show jumping competitions before marrying British rider Harry Charles, an Olympic gold medalist, in 2025.

Erin Jobs, 31, studied architecture at Tulane University, a private research university in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has maintained a low profile away from the media spotlight.

Lisa Brennan-Jobs, 48, works as a professional journalist and author. In 2019, she published her book Petite chose, detailing her life and experiences.

Fifteen years after Steve Jobs transformed modern technology, his family members continue to forge independent paths across philanthropy, science, design, athletics, and literature, carrying forward a legacy shaped by deliberate choices about wealth and responsibility.
