Ted Sarandos Says Mindhunter Canceled as Fincher Was Busy

Netflix chief executive Ted Sarandos said the streaming service wanted to make a third season of Mindhunter, but production stalled because show creator David Fincher was busy directing the movie Mank. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Sarandos offered a different explanation for the show's end than Fincher previously gave.

In 2024, Fincher stated that Mindhunter did not receive a third season due to high production costs and low viewership. However, Sarandos said Netflix always counted on continuing the series. He explained that Fincher was extremely meticulous and could not handle two projects at once, which led to repeated filming delays. Sarandos added that he would still love to see a third season.

Mindhunter plot and reception

Mindhunter aired on Netflix in 2017 and 2019, following two FBI agents who interview imprisoned serial killers to understand criminal minds and solve murder cases faster. The series earned enthusiastic reviews, with 97 percent of critics and 95 percent of audience members recommending it on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
