The upcoming season was officially confirmed in a television preview for autumn 2026 compiled by Kara Hedash. The streaming platform MGM+, which is available through Amazon Prime Video, has not yet announced an exact premiere date.

First images published alongside the report revealed returning lead actors and a major new addition to the cast for the second installment.

First look images and cast additions

The new production photos confirm that Joe Freeman returns as Luke Ellis, who appears standing behind a door. Ben Barnes also reprises his role as Tim Jamieson, shown in conversation with Luke.

Mary-Louise Parker returns as Mrs. Sigsby, pictured inside a study or office. Joining the main ensemble is Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen, who will play a mysterious character whose details remain undisclosed.

Story details and finale setup

The science fiction thriller adapts the 2019 Stephen King novel of the same name. Created and written by Benjamin Cavell, the series is executive produced by King and directed by From director Jack Bender.

The narrative follows a group of children and teenagers with supernatural powers who are abducted and subjected to experimental tests inside a secretive facility called The Institute.

Although the eight episodes of the first season covered the main story of King's book, key changes in the season finale left room to explore what happens next to Luke, Tim, and the other survivors after the destruction of the facility.

Production timeline and Stephen King universe

Season one completed its initial broadcast run in July 2025, and MGM+ officially ordered a second season the following month. Filming on season two wrapped in June 2026, ensuring the episodes were finished in time for a release before winter.

The premiere follows a busy period for screen adaptations of King's books in 2025. That year saw the theatrical releases of feature films The Long Walk, The Monkey, and The Running Man, alongside the television debuts of IT: Welcome to Derry on HBO Max and season one of The Institute on MGM+.
