Tiffany Darwish faced a wave of online body-shaming after a clip from her recent performance at the Garden Amphitheatre in California went viral, racking up over three million views on social media.
The 54-year-old singer took the stage in an oversized black shirt worn over a bedazzled leotard, fishnet stockings and chunky ankle boots, performing classic hits from her career for a large crowd of fans.
Trolls in the comments targeted the singer’s appearance, but her supporters pushed back. “She is beautiful, still sounds great and is having fun! Nobody looks like they did in Playboy 30 years ago,” one fan wrote. Another added, “She looks happy, sounds good and is having a blast! YES older women are allowed to exist and thrive.”
Tiffany has previously spoken openly about her weight gain, attributing it to a long Covid battle. In an interview with The Mirror, she said she had fluctuated with her weight quite a bit over the last couple of years because of long Covid and was learning to deal with it. She added that some days she battled feeling well enough to go and work out, which was not the norm for her.
She also said that constantly touring and travelling had aggravated her symptoms, causing flare-ups and water retention.
In an interview with The Guardian, Tiffany said she was probably more body-conscious now than she was back then, and that her weight yo-yoed a lot. She said she had tried everything over the years and found it unsustainable, and was trying to come to terms with the idea that it was not about size but about how you feel.
On dealing with online trolls, she told The Mirror she had a limit and took great pleasure in deleting cruel comments.
Tiffany shot to fame in 1987 with her cover of the 1960s hit “I Think We’re Alone Now,” which topped the Hot 100. Her self-titled debut album also reached number one, making her the youngest female artist at the time to achieve a number-one album. Her second single, “Could’ve Been,” also hit the top spot.
