Actor Tim Curry has died at the age of 80 at his home in Los Angeles, prompting tributes across theatre, film, television and animation. His representative confirmed that the actor passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, although no specific cause of death was initially made public.
Tributes to Curry have poured in from colleagues, admirers and creators spanning more than five decades of work. Among them, Dan Povenmire, co-creator of Phineas and Ferb and original voice of Doctor Doofenshmirtz, paid tribute by highlighting one of Curry's most curious guest appearances on the Disney Channel series, when the actor technically made Perry the Platypus speak.
Povenmire recalled Curry's guest role as Doctor Lloyd Wexler, an evil scientist who appeared in the Season 1 episode A Hard Day's Knight. The episode featured an elaborate comic storyline centered on the series' silent secret agent.
In the episode, Perry the Platypus receives a mission as Agent P to infiltrate Evil-Con, a convention of evil scientists held in England. His objective is to monitor the activities of Doctor Doofenshmirtz without drawing attention to himself.
Perry the Platypus disguise plot
To gain entry to the convention, Perry's agency captures the real Doctor Lloyd Wexler and disguises Perry to assume his identity. The trick initially succeeds, with Doofenshmirtz becoming thrilled to meet Wexler, whom he views as one of his greatest role models in evil science.
However, the mission faces an immediate obstacle because Perry the Platypus does not talk. The character, whose usual voice is provided by Dee Bradley Baker through signature chatter and clicking sounds, cannot hold a spoken conversation as a human scientist.
To overcome this, Perry relies on an audio recording of Doctor Wexler reading his own autobiography. By playing different excerpts and moving his mouth in time with the audio, Perry fakes speaking directly in front of Doofenshmirtz.
The voice recorded for Doctor Wexler was provided by Tim Curry. As a result, Agent P appears on screen lip-syncing to Curry's recognizable voice, technically giving the silent platypus human speech for several seconds.
The deception fails when the tape recording gets stuck and repeats the same syllable over and over, raising Doofenshmirtz's suspicions. When Perry removes the disguise, Doofenshmirtz initially recognizes him only as a normal platypus, realizing he is Agent P only after the animal puts his signature fedora back on.
Voice cast and Rocky Horror reunion
Povenmire's tribute served to clarify a piece of show trivia that often went unnoticed by fans. Curry was never the regular voice of Perry the Platypus, a role held continuously since the show's launch by Dee Bradley Baker.
The vocal gag was specifically designed for the original English broadcast. In international dubs, such as the Spanish version broadcast in Spain, local voice actors dubbed Curry's dialogue, meaning viewers of dubbed versions never associated the scene with Curry.
Curry's involvement in the episode extended beyond Doctor Wexler. He also voiced Stubbings, a butler who appeared in the episode's second subplot during the Flynn-Fletcher family trip to England.
Curry returned to Phineas and Ferb years later to voice Worthington DuBois, a character created to set up an intentional nod to Curry's iconic acting history.
In the series, Worthington DuBois was the rival of Lawrence Fletcher, the father of Ferb, who was voiced in the original version by Richard O'Brien. O'Brien created The Rocky Horror Show and starred as Riff Raff alongside Curry's Doctor Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 film adaptation The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Co-creators Povenmire and Jeff Swampy Marsh explained at the time that they deliberately brought Curry and O'Brien together through their animated characters, using Phineas and Ferb to host a small Rocky Horror reunion decades after their original film collaboration.
