The 1982 rock hit Africa by American band Toto has been named the top soft rock song of all time by Amazon Music.
The track finished ahead of Every Breath You Take by British group The Police in second place and Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics in third, according to a report by Parade magazine.
Africa was released on Toto's fourth studio album, Toto IV. Band keyboardist David Paich wrote both the music and the lyrics for the hit, spending approximately six months crafting the words.
The iconic chorus came to him much faster. Paich recalled that the chorus melody was already playing in his head, allowing him to write and record it in about ten minutes. He admitted that he was surprised by how easily one of Toto's most famous songs came together.
Inspiration and themes
The idea behind the composition stemmed from an unusual source. Paich had never visited Africa, but he was deeply moved by a television documentary about the continent and materials from UNICEF depicting the suffering of its people. The images left a lasting impression on the musician.
Rather than writing a conventional romantic song, Paich aimed to express a deep appreciation for the continent itself. He also incorporated his personal struggles, including his constant work schedule and his desire to make time for a personal life.
Chart performance and legacy
Following its release, Africa became Toto's biggest commercial hit. In 1983, the track reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the group's only single to top the primary chart in the United States.
Formed in Los Angeles in 1977, Toto emerged as one of the prominent American rock bands of the era, combining pop melodies with polished studio musicianship.
Decades after its debut, the song remains widely recognized. In 2024, Africa re-entered the Billboard Global 200 chart, rising from 183rd to 174th position, reaffirming its status as an enduring staple of 1980s music.
