Lithuanian coach Valdas Dambrauskas will lead Azerbaijani side Sabah Futbol Klubu against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League initial phase. The fixture marks a historic first visit to Azerbaijan for the Spanish club.
Dambrauskas, 49, reached Europe's premier club competition through an unconventional route. More than two decades ago, he earned the funds for his coaching education by competing on a television game show.
Game show victory and studies in England
In 2002, while a 25-year-old student, Dambrauskas appeared on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to raise money to study football coaching. He won 4,000 litas, equivalent to roughly 3,000 euros, which enabled him to move to England.
Dambrauskas enrolled at London Metropolitan University, where he studied Sports Science and Coaching. During his time in England, he secured internships at the academies of Manchester United, Fulham, and Brentford to gain insight into English football operations.
His official managerial career began in 2007 when he took charge of Kingsbury London Tigers in the ninth division of English football. He later returned to Lithuania to manage Ekranas Panevezys and FK Zalgiris.
Dambrauskas subsequently built an extensive career across Europe. Before taking the head coaching job at Sabah, he managed clubs in Latvia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, and Hungary.
Barcelona pursuit of European glory
Sabah Futbol Klubu, an organization founded less than ten years ago, will host Barcelona as part of the revised Champions League format. The league stage features eight fixtures per team, split evenly between four home matches and four away games.
FC Barcelona enter the tournament aiming to secure their sixth European Cup title, having last lifted the trophy in 2015. Manager Hans-Dieter Flick leads the project following two consecutive domestic LaLiga championship wins.
Barcelona strengthened their squad during the summer transfer window with the additions of Gordon, Adeyemi, and midfielder Rodri. Rodri joined the Spanish side after winning the World Cup with the Spain national team and being awarded the Ballon d'Or.
The campaign culminates with the Champions League final taking place at the home stadium of Atletico de Madrid, giving Barcelona an added incentive to reach the showpiece match in their home country.
