Vladimir Ivashkov Warns Joint Cracking May Signal Disease

Oncologist Vladimir Ivashkov has warned that popping or cracking joints can be a sign of dangerous medical conditions such as osteoarthritis.

Writing on his Telegram channel, Ivashkov explained that while joint cracking is frequently a normal variation of bodily function, it requires medical attention when accompanied by persistent pain or stiffness.

Harmless causes of joint popping

Ivashkov detailed several harmless mechanisms that cause joints to produce clicking or popping sounds during everyday movement. According to the doctor, the noise can stem from gas bubbles collapsing within joint fluid, friction between uneven cartilage surfaces, or tendons catching momentarily on bone before slipping back into place.

He emphasized that when these characteristic popping sounds occur on their own without any accompanying symptoms, individuals have no reason for concern.

Joint crepitus is the medical term used to describe popping, snapping, or cracking sounds produced during joint movement. In healthy joints, synovial fluid acts as a natural cushion and lubricant, reducing friction between cartilage-covered bone ends.

When a joint stretches or flexes, pressure changes within the capsule cause dissolved gases to form microbubbles that burst rapidly, generating an audible sound. Similarly, as body positions change, tendons can snap slightly out of alignment over bony prominences before slipping back into place without causing harm.

Warning signs of osteoarthritis

However, Ivashkov warned that joint cracking can sometimes serve as an early indicator of osteoarthritis when popping sounds occur alongside more troubling physical symptoms.

The doctor noted that joint cracking associated with osteoarthritis typically coincides with persistent pain that fails to clear up even after a warm-up session. Patients may also experience localized swelling around the affected joint, an inability to fully extend or unbend their knees, and morning joint stiffness that lasts for more than 30 minutes.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic, degenerative joint disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage cushioning the ends of bones gradually wears down over time.

As the cartilage deteriorates, bone surfaces rub directly against one another, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and diminished flexibility. The condition most frequently affects weight-bearing joints, such as the knees, hips, and spine.

Preventative steps and joint care

For individuals who show none of these painful symptoms but still wish to get rid of joint cracking, Ivashkov suggested adopting proactive lifestyle changes. The physician concluded that people should increase their overall physical movement, build supporting muscle strength around their joints, and work to normalize their body weight.

Ivashkov's remarks build on advice previously offered to active individuals by traumatologist Dmitry Dyachkov. In recommendations aimed at runners, Dyachkov emphasized that people engaging in regular physical activity should pay close attention to physical feedback and listen to their bodies to maintain long-term joint health.
