Walter Koenig dies: Star Trek actor passes away at 90

Actor Walter Koenig, who found worldwide fame playing Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek television series, has died at the age of 90.

Koenig died of natural causes on Sunday, October 25, according to a report by the celebrity news website TMZ. His daughter, Danielle Koenig, and his niece were present at his bedside when he passed away.

The veteran actor began his on-screen career in the early 1960s, securing roles in television series such as the sitcom Gidget and the adventure programme I Spy, which aired in Brazil under the title Os Destemidos, both broadcast in 1965.

His defining role arrived in 1966 when he was cast as Ensign Pavel Chekov in Star Trek. Koenig played the character across 36 episodes of the original series before the groundbreaking science-fiction show ended in 1969.

Star Trek film franchise

Created by Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek became a cultural phenomenon, following the voyages of the starship USS Enterprise. Koenig joined the core bridge crew alongside William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Chekov, introduced during the Cold War as a young Russian officer, served as the ship navigator and quickly became a fan favourite among viewers worldwide.

Koenig subsequently reprised the beloved role in multiple feature films for the studio. He returned for Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, followed by Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982 and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock in 1984, before featuring in several other cinematic sequels over the following decade.

Honours and final roles

His work within the franchise brought formal industry recognition. He received two nominations from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films in the United States, in 1983 and 1987. In 2012, his decades of contributions to the entertainment industry were commemorated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Koenig remained active in cinema well into his later years. His final screen role came in the independent comedy film Raging Midlife, which was released in 2025, concluding a screen career that spanned more than six decades.
