Warner Bros. is negotiating with Greta Gerwig to direct a sequel to Barbie, according to the New York Times. The studio is also trying to bring back Margo Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who played the lead roles in the first film.
The report noted that if a deal is not reached by December, the rights to the sequel will revert to Mattel, meaning Warner Bros. would no longer be able to make the film.
The original Barbie film
Barbie was released in 2023. The film follows Barbie, who lives in the perfect Barbieland before finding herself in the real world, full of danger and uncertainty. It was a box office success, grossing more than $1.4 billion on a $100 million budget.
