Determine what is stopping you from losing weight – a medical or psychological factor?

We all want to be healthy, slim and beautiful. However, excess weight often refuses to go away, despite all efforts. What prevents us from losing weight?

There are several reasons that influence the weight loss process: these are medical and psychological factors, and our habits, and the way of life we lead.

Do not take care! In our articles, we collect the latest scientific data and the opinions of authoritative health experts. But remember: only a doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment.

Medical factors

Our appearance directly depends on the state of health: the complexion, the state of the hair and, of course, the figure. However, not all diseases can be detected immediately, some of them can remain invisible for many years. For this reason, we sometimes struggle for a long time and in vain with the visible consequences of the disease (overweight), without paying attention to the root cause.

Hormonal problems

It is known that obesity is not always the result of an “unhealthy” diet and a sedentary lifestyle. The cause of overweight can be diseases of the endocrine system, as a result of which the hormonal balance in the body is disturbed. Hormonal imbalance threatens us not only with problems with weight, but also with serious disturbances in the activity of all body systems (cardiovascular, digestive and others).

Symptoms of hormonal problems can include:

  • Weight gain for no apparent reason
  • Sudden weight loss with increased appetite
  • Increased sweating, fatigue
  • Excessive hair growth, oily skin, acne
  • An increase in blood pressure to high levels
  • Sharp blurred vision, headache
  • Itchy skin, constant thirst, dry mouth (in diabetes).

Therefore, if you have problems with overweight, the first thing to do is to undergo a medical examination so that, if necessary, start treatment in time and “do not start” the situation.

“Heavy” heredity

In addition to the above hormonal causes, there is also a genetic predisposition to being overweight. If your parents, grandparents were overweight, you are of course much more likely to experience the same problems as your friend, whose relatives are athletic. However, predisposition is not yet a sentence. Many genetic characteristics are highly dependent on the environment in which we live. So, for example, if for a number of reasons even a person prone to excess weight does not have the opportunity to eat well (regularly malnourished), while experiencing stress and heavy loads, it is unlikely to recover. At the same time, regardless of heredity, anyone who overeats (eating too much, eating fatty, high-calorie foods often, etc.) can have satiety issues. So there is only one conclusion: with a genetic predisposition to excess weight, you need to pay more attention to your diet and level of activity – a balanced menu and regular physical activity will help ” overcome” even the most “heavy” heredity.

Psychological factors

But it also happens that everything is in order with health, but you still cannot lose weight. Every method has been tried, from the hottest diets to grueling workouts in the gym, but either there are no results or it’s utterly insignificant. Some psychological difficulties may be the reason that prevents weight loss.

Motivation

We go on a diet for various reasons (all girlfriends lose weight in the summer, the dress has become small, my husband said yesterday: “you have gained something” or, in general, because since youth you have been dissatisfied with yourself and food restriction has already become a habit). However, there is usually no inner conviction that we really need it. Therefore, there is no clear action plan. For this reason, all activities to achieve ideal forms are carried out very inconsistently: I eat only vegetable salads for a week and I run in the morning, then I go sightseeing and eat heartily and take a sports break from a week – one step forward and two back.

Only if we know exactly why we need to lose extra pounds can we count on success. So you have to start by setting a goal: why should I lose weight? As soon as the answer is found and, above all, internally approved, the forces will appear to achieve the desired result.

emotional state

It also depends a lot on our mood. Especially in stressful conditions (many of us, during a period of increased emotional stress, start eating sweets, pastries, or simply increasing the amount of food we eat). The so-called “stressed eating”, on the one hand, helps to relieve tension and relax a little, but, on the other hand, it is very harmful to health (not only physical, but also psychological). It is important to learn how to cheer up not only with a beautiful and tasty cake or a chocolate bar. Alternative means must be found (for example, taking a relaxing bath, taking a walk in the park or playing sports). If only gastronomic pleasures can console you in difficult times, it makes sense to seek the advice of a professional psychologist. This will help to find the real problem of such behavior and, accordingly, deal with it.

Way of life

Our daily habits as well as medical and psychological factors greatly affect our weight. Thus, excessive body weight contributes to:

  • chronic sleep deprivation
  • eat too fast
  • fast food
  • reduced physical activity, sedentary lifestyle
  • bad habits
  • inconsistency (today I eat well and go to bed on time, tomorrow I watch TV until 4 am, I eat sandwiches or muffins, etc.)

In a nutshell, to be physically fit, one-off promotions are not enough (“sit down” for two weeks on a diet or buy a gym membership for a month). It is necessary to constantly lead a healthy lifestyle, regularly undergo medical examinations and be attentive to your psychological state.
