Food Police: 7 Foods You Shouldn’t Buy

When going to the supermarket, one rarely thinks that seemingly harmless products can be dangerous. And some of them are also presented as more expensive counterparts.

1. Cereals and pasta by weight

Bulk products are generally associated with more naturalness and healthiness than packaged products. However, this does not apply to cereals and pasta. Insect larvae often start in plastic containers where groceries are stored by weight. And on them you are unlikely to find the date of manufacture of the product. It is better to buy buckwheat, millet, rice and pasta in factory packages.

2. Greens in the package

This point may seem absurd, but a green salad in a packet is much less healthy than a regular salad. Colonies of harmful intestinal bacteria, including salmonella, settle on the polythene sheets. Lettuce on ventilated counters is much safer. Also, packaged greens are more expensive.

3. Ground spices

Why didn’t you like them, ask yourself. We answer: in the manufacture of crushed seasonings, preservatives and food additives are added. And some types of spices are completely replaced by cheaper and more affordable counterparts, but are sold at an inflated price. This mainly applies to cinnamon (cassia is often given for this) and saffron (marigolds are sold instead). If possible, buy spices by weight and peppercorns, not ground.

4. Grated cheese

As you can see, despite the convenience, pre-grated and packaged foods often end up on the non grata list. The packaging often contains cheese that is not fresh and not of the brand indicated on the label. All this is easy to disguise by grating cheese on a grater. But what is even more unpleasant: sometimes cellulose is added to the product to avoid lumps, and other additions.

5. Ready salads

Store prepackaged salads are a real pig in a poke. It is completely incomprehensible, and above all, it is impossible to verify what has been added to them. It can be, for example, stale mayonnaise. If you don’t want to poison yourself, it’s better not to buy ready-made salads.

6. Grilled chicken

Such a fragrant and appetizing chicken can be cooked from stale meat, which is “revived” by soaking in a marinade. The chances of getting less than the freshest product are increasing due to the popularity of fast food restaurants, where many people prefer to buy fried chicken.

7. Coffee 3 in 1

These little bags do more harm than good. Natural and even instant coffee in them and does not smell. But palm oil, stabilizers, emulsifiers and colorants are present in abundance. This explosive mixture would be much better replaced by regular coffee with milk and – if desired – with sugar.
