There are songs or albums that stay in the memory, that mark an era, that leave their mark. And for Argentinian rock, one of them is “Life”, by Sui Generis, which celebrates its 50th anniversary.
It was the debut album by the legendary duo of Charly García and Nito Mestre. And he hit the streets in February 1973, with hits like “Canción Para Mi Muerte”, “Necesito”, “Dime Quién Me Lo Robó”, “Mariel y el Capitán”, Estación” and “Quizás Porque”.
Sui Generis had been formed in 1968, when Charly and Nito were still in high school, studying at the Dámaso Centeno Institute, in Caballito.
It started as a group with several members, but gradually they deserted and in 1972 only the pianist and the singer remained. Musicians like Alejandro “Pipi” Correa, Carlos Piégari, Juan Bellia and Francisco “Paco” Prati have passed through the group.
The recording of “Vida”, his first album, took place in September and October 1972, at Phonalex studios. Sui Generis had input from session members called in by artist producer Billy Bond, for example, bassist Alejandro Medina and guitarist Claudio Gabis, from Manal.
Sui Generis’ rise began with their presence at the famous BA Rock festival, in November 1972, where the duo performed “Canción Para Mi Muerte”, which was later included in the film “Rock Until Sunrise”. .
The Scrapbook “Vida” was just released in February and the single in March, although it was long believed that both releases were late the previous year. Today García and Mestre confirm this themselves from their social networks.
