More than 4,900 people were injured at the somewhat deadly Astroworld music festival, according to the latest figures from victims’ advocates. This is much more than what was said earlier.
When the disaster litigation merged in a major court in late January, lawyers listed 387 individual cases, with an estimated 2,800 victims. But cases were expected to be “saved” and one of the communiqués said that new claims were “written almost every day”.
A few months later, the number of people complaining about the case seems to have increased.
The new file listed 4,932 alleged victims as of Monday. In addition to the 10 deaths, the new record says 732 complaints were made by people who needed “extensive medical treatment” and 1,649 by people who needed less intensive care. Another 2,540 were listed as “other”, meaning the extent of their injuries was still being considered.
The statement came from Jason Itkin, Richard Mitoff and Sean Roberts, three attorneys appointed by the plaintiffs’ so-called attorneys. The number of claims filed is important because it can determine the total settlement amount or damages that will eventually be paid to victims. In a filing on Monday, Itkin, Mythof and Roberts said they would “continue to evaluate and update” the case as it progresses.
