Who Shouldn’t Use Popular Psyllium Colon Supplement – It May Increase Constipation

Psyllium is one of the most popular dietary fiber supplements. However, due to one nuance, this remedy can harm, and instead of improving bowel movements, it can lead to increased constipation.

Psyllium is psyllium husk, a dietary supplement known for its ability to quickly and effectively improve bowel function.

For the production of psyllium, raw materials from a special variety of plantain, which grows in Asia and some states of India, are used. Nevertheless, the supplement is very popular in Russia, not least because of its low cost: in the markets, a jar of psyllium per daily intake for a month can be purchased for only a few hundred rubles.

One teaspoon of psyllium contains 3 grams of fiber, or up to 10% of the daily requirement for this nutrient. Up to 2 tablespoons of psyllium husk can be consumed per day – which greatly eases the condition of people during diets or prone to frequent constipation.

However, if you drink psyllium incorrectly, you can only exacerbate the problem of going to the bathroom.

Like many fiber-rich dietary supplements, psyllium requires increased fluid intake throughout the day. Ideally, immediately after taking a spoonful of the pod, you should drink two glasses of clean water – and increase the daily fluid intake to at least 2.5 liters. Recall that it does not include coffee, black tea and other beverages that do not have the ability to replenish the body’s water balance.

Psyllium is a type of soluble fiber. It begins to work actively in the intestines only if there is enough water. Thanks to the liquid, it swells and turns into a gel that stimulates comfortable intestinal transit.

If you can’t afford to drink a lot of water, unfortunately, from taking psyllium you will only feel an unpleasant bursting in the intestines, and sometimes difficulty going to the toilet. That is why, before you start using this supplement, assess your strength and adjust the dose. After all, the more psyllium you take, the more water your body will need!
