HBO has succeeded in its adaptation of The Last of Us
Season 1 of The Last of Us beautifully finished. For the latest installment of the series adapted from the video game of the same name, the public was at the rendezvous with 8.2 million viewers only in the United States. An impressive figure. All the more with the simultaneous broadcast of the Oscarswhich therefore will not have been a problem for HBO.
We owe this success to Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (creator of the game), the two showrunners who were able to grasp the best of video games (see our review). As a reminder, The Last of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. We follow Joel (Pedro Pascal), a man charged with accompanying Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a teenager immune to the virus that has decimated humanity, across America.

Warning, SPOILERS! In episode 9, the duo are closer than ever. Both share their tragic past. Joel talks about his suicide attempt, and Ellie recounts the loss of Riley. We touch a peak of emotion when Joel half acknowledges that, most of the time, it was Ellie who helped him heal from the loss of his daughter.
Except that shortly after the fireflies attack them. When he wakes up, Joel finds Ellie about to suffer a deadly operation but which should make it possible to create a vaccine. Unable to lose “his son” a second time, he throws himself in a massacre of fireflies and leaves with Ellie. When the latter wakes up in turn, she can only hide the truth from her.
Upcoming changes
While the first season covered the game entirely The Last of Usthe sequel will be an adaptation of the second game, The last of us part II. Several details have already been given about how HBO will handle a much longer and more complex story. First, as one might suspect, this time it will be necessary different seasons to cover the whole story. This was announced by Craig Mazin in an interview for HQwithout revealing the exact number of seasons.
The showrunner also made it clear that there will be upcoming game changes.
Some of the things I’m most excited about (in Part II) are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life in this other version. I think it’s exciting because it’s based on the feelings you’ve had in the game, very strongly, in a new way.

A statement that may come as a surprise when we see how season 1 of The Last of Us remained faithful to the original work. But it will be interesting to see the changes that will be made. Craig Mazin claims it anyway some elements will remain “identical”but more will come “enrich” the story. In this regard, we know in particular that theJoel and Ellie’s relationship will continue to be explored and that there will be, as in the game, a use of flashback.
Lastly, while season 1 featured quite a few infectedseason 2 will show more and different types. sporeswhich until now had been replaced by tendrils, this time they will be used in the next episodes.
Cast and air date for the second season
As for casting, we still don’t know who will play the new characters. However, it has been confirmed that Bella Ramsey will continue to play Ellie in this sequel which takes place several years later. We will have to wait a bit before knowing who will play Abby and Dina, two of the most important characters of The last of us part II.
Season 2 of the series should start shooting soonpotentially in the spring according to Pedro Pascal, but at least during this year 2023. The airing of the next episodes will therefore only take place not before 2024, or even 2025.
