Frankenstein : a new monster for Guillermo del Toro
After PinocchioOscar winner for best animated film, Guillermo del Toro intends to tackle another literary myth already the subject of numerous adaptations. From the James Whale classic to the series Penny TerriblePassing through Young Frankenstein and Kenneth Branagh’s film, Frankenstein is a continuous source of inspiration for film and television.
The director of Nightmare alley he in turn wishes to transpose Mary Shelley’s masterpiece to the screen. A long-standing project that seems obvious, so much the director’s love for monsters fits perfectly into this tragic story in which Victor Frankenstein, a student passionate about science and fascinated by the philosopher’s stone, gives birth to a hideous creature. Rejected by his “father”, this deformed being learns to survive on his own. He discovers the cruelty of men, which awakens his thirst for revenge and drives him to murder.
Guillermo del Toro has also demonstrated with Crimson Peak who mastered the Gothic aesthetic. He knows it too perfectly connects macabre and emotiontwo main elements of the novel.
Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield and Mia Goth top the list
With this live-action film, the director continues his collaboration with Netflix Troll hunters, Pinocchio OR Guillermo del Toro’s cabinet of curiosities. Second Expirationhe would not have finished the script yet but would have already started negotiations to form his cast.
The director, apparently, would like to entrust the main roles to Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield and Mia Goth. It would too met the three actors, who would be ready to participate in the film even though “no formal offer has been made” according to variety. Netflix declined to comment on these statements.
