The Last of Us: Season 1 ending was almost different

The Last of Us : love in the time of the infected

A decidedly dystopian narrative, The Last of Us mainly revolves around human relationships. The protagonist, Joel (Pedro Pascal), a man with a tragic past, trying to survive in a now unattractive world. The earth is like this plagued by the “infected”, following a terrible contamination by a fungus. Alone, the protagonist gets back on track when he is entrusted with a very important mission: to make Ellie (Bella Ramsey) travel, such an important teenagerthroughout the United States.

Joel is quick to see why the latter it’s so special in the eyes of the fireflies, alias revolutionaries who challenge the dictatorship implemented by the government since the beginning of the pandemic. Ellie, despite being bitten by an infected, it doesn’t transform. The maiden then represents a great ray of hope for all humanity.

All for his daughter

After The Last of Us, Joel and Ellie finally reach their destination. The opportunity for them to find Marlene, who, as we learn from a flashback, he knew very well the teenager’s mother. As soon as Joel and Ellie arrive, the teenager has to suffer A surgery. The unfortunate woman ignores him, but she is not it shouldn’t survive to the operation. A brutal reality that Marlene reveals to Joel, before having him escorted out of the facility. But she was without counting on the love that the latter now has for Ellie, his surrogate daughter. Listening only to her heart, Joel rebels and it ends kill everyone that stand between him and his protégé, including the doctor who has to operate on him. The man then leaves the scene, Ellie in her arms, remembering the heartbreaking scene of Sarah’s death in episode 1.

Arrested by Marlene before he has time to escape, the latter’s speech does not convince Joel, who killed him to make sure you don’t try find ellie. When the woman wakes up from anesthesia a few hours later, he lies to her blatantly. After a second try, he seems to accept Joel’s story, which includes the claim that no vaccine can be found.

An even more bitter end

As Craig Mazin reveals HQthe co-creator of the series, this final sequence it could have been different. He explained that the director of the episode suggested another setup. A “longer and sadder” version where Ellie, instead of looking at Joel, would have said “OK,” sooner turn heels. We would then see the two characters move in the same directionwithout really knowing if they were moving forward together or not.

During this interview, Craig Mazin explained that he did many questioned, and this, with Neil Druckmann and the other authors, at the end of the first season. Everyone feared the reaction from fans of the game, plus they chose to end the flurry of episodes as the first installment of The Last of Us. The screenwriter also added it the last blow on Elliewhich he describes as a “suspended moment”, bears witness to the following question: what does the young woman really feel?
